Happy Earth Day! Here’s the pattern for my produce bags. They’re great for fruits & veggies when you grocery shop or whatever…my mom uses one for golf balls.

It’s crocheted in rounds in one piece from the bottom up, so there’s no seaming. Weave in the ends when you’re done and you’re good to go. I’m using nylon but crochet cotton would work too, it just tends to get stretched out over time and usage. Gauge isn’t super important since it doesn’t have to fit anyone. You can experiment with fibers and hook sizes and see what you like best.

A couple of notes before you start:
- I use a size 5 metal hook and nylon sewing thread from a leftover, unlabeled cone someone gave me. I can’t tell you what the brand is, but it looks just like this nylon thread sold over at ThreadArt. I’ve also seen smaller cones of similar weight nylon thread in my local fabric shop, I think it’s mostly used for tying and edging quilts. If you use a big cone you’ll get more than one bag from it, if you use a smaller one, you may need more than one.
- Don’t ch 1 at the beginning of the first few single crochet rounds or join them with a sl st at the end. Just keep working continuously around in a big spiral. You can put a stitch marker at the beginning of the single crochet rounds if that helps you keep count of the stitches, but once you start the mesh loop rounds, it really doesn’t matter where the start/ends of the rounds are.
Ch 5, slip stitch in first chain, to join it into a ring.
Round 1: Work 12 sc into the center of the circle.
Round 2: (Sc in first st, 2 sc in next st) around. 18 stitches total in this round.
Round 3: (Sc in first two sts, 2 sc in next st) around. 24 stitches total.
Round 4: (sc in first three sts, 2 sc in next st) around. 30 stitches total.
Starting the mesh part of the bag….
Round 5: (ch 9, sc in next st) around.
Round 6: (ch 9, sc in next loop) around.
Repeat round 6 until the bag is as long as you’d like it.
Finishing: Work 9 sc in each chain loop around. Join last stitch to first sc with a sl st. Cut thread, finish off, and weave in all ends. You can put a piece of cord through as a drawstring or just knot the ends like I do.

Thanks for posting the pattern! I would love to make a few of these; I’ll just need to track down the yarn.

i love these bags. I started making one yesterday and it is simple and fun and i will feel much better about the produce at the grocery store if it is going in something like this instead of the plastic they offer.

Nice to have a pattern! I also like to braid or sc a chain and weave it through the top of the sack, that way instead of a knot I have a pull-string to cinch it closed.
